Te Waipounamu / South Island

The majority of glaciers in Aotearoa New Zealand are located on on Te Waipounamu / South Island. Nearly all of them sit along the main divide of Kā Tiritiri o te Moana / The Southern Alps with a higher frequency around the country’s highest peak Aoraki Mt Cook (3724m) and the two most famous glaciers; Fox Glacier and Franz Joseph Glacier on Te Tai Poutini / West Coast.
