The Heemskerck Glacier is a glacier in the Te Tai Poutini / West Coast region of the Te Waipounamu / South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

It has a latitude of -43.553604 and a longitude of  170.164946 and it’s status is: Official Assigned.

Named after Abel Tasman’s ship, the Heemskerck, by Charles Douglas during his reconnaissance survey in 1894-5. Spelling alteration from Heemskirk Glacier.

The submitter has provided a significant number of reference sources to help verify the spelling of Heemskerck. However, the origin of Tasman’s ship’s name is not provided. Possibly the ship was named after the Dutch renaissance painter, Maerten van Heemskerck (1498-1574); or the Dutch explorer, Jacob van Heemskerck (1567-1607); or the Dutch painter, Egbert van Heemskerck (1610-1680); etc.

It’s geographical description is noted as: Alpine glacier flowing northerly from the main divide into Albert Glacier, located north of Mount Tasman.
