The NZGBs archives record, ‘C. Hilgendorf in his article on Place Names in the N.Z.A.J. No. 29, June 1942, states:- The name appears in Mannering’s Map in 1881, but a reference in Lendenfeld (1884) indicates that it was named before that date, and therefore probably by von Haast. If it was named by Haast in conformity with his usual plan, then the Balfour was probably F.M. Balfour (1851-1882), British Biologist, who worked on embrycology of fishes at Naples, and perished on Aiguille Blanche in 1882.’
