The Tartarus Icefall is a glacier in the Ōtākou / Otago region of the Te Waipounamu / South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

It has a latitude of -44.353427 and a longitude of  168.83167 and it’s status is: Official Assigned.

Name submitted by Mr Paul Powell of Dunedin, for inclusion on maps in a book “Men Aspiring” that he had written. Mr Powell had a 24 year association with the area. Named from Greek mythology. Tartarus was the abyss below Hades where the Titans were confined. General name for place of punishment in Hades. First crossed by J K Skinner, G T S Baylis, P Child and P S Powell in January 1965.

It’s geographical description is noted as: Part of Volta Glacier which spills over main divide on to bluffs above Ruth Stream, 2km North-east of Fastness Peak.  Mount Pollux Survey District.
