The Birley Glacier is a glacier in the Ōtākou / Otago region of the Te Waipounamu / South Island of Aotearoa New Zealand.

It has a latitude of -44.61145 and a longitude of  168.420138 and it’s status is: Official Assigned.

Birley Pass: Fiordland National Park Eglinton Valley. The Glacier was names in 1887 by Malcolm Ross in honour of the alpine guide Harry Birley, who had led Ross and G. Marshall to the glacier on a first climb in 1885. Ross recorded that ‘We bivouacked on the side of the mountain just below the Eastern glacier which I named after Birley, who had guided us so well on the first expedition.’ Source: Reed, A.W. & Peter Dowling, Place Names of New Zealand, 2010.

It’s geographical description is noted as: Glacier northeast of Mount Earnslaw, above Hunter Creek and south of Forbes Mountains.
